Post-Truth by Lee McIntyre How we arrived in a post-truth era, when "alternative facts" replace actual facts, and feelings have more weight than evidence. Are we living in a post-truth world, where "alternative facts" replace actual facts and feelings have more weight than evidence? How did we get here? In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Lee McIntyre traces the development of the post-truth phenomenon from science denial through the rise of "fake news," from our psychological blind spots to the public's retreat into "information silos." What, exactly, is post-truth? Is it wishful thinking, political spin, mass delusion, bold-faced lying? McIntyre analyzes recent examples — claims about inauguration crowd size, crime statistics, and the popular vote — and finds that post-truth is an assertion of ideological supremacy by which its practitioners try to compel someone to believe something regardless of the evidence. Yet post-truth didn't begin with the 2016 election; the denial of scientific facts about smoking, evolution, vaccines, and climate change offers a road map for more widespread fact denial. Add to this the wired-in cognitive biases that make us feel that our conclusions are based on good reasoning even when they are not, the decline of traditional media and the rise of social media, and the emergence of fake news as a political tool, and we have the ideal conditions for post-truth. McIntyre also argues provocatively that the right wing borrowed from postmodernism — specifically, the idea that there is no such thing as objective truth — in its attacks on science and facts. McIntyre argues that we can fight post-truth, and that the first step in fighting post-truth is to understand it.
Post-Truth, False News, and Information Literacy
The Oxford English Dictionary Word of the Year for 2016 is “post-truth,” defined as “'relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief” . While not a new term, its use has spiked, largely due to the huge number of false news
Reflections on Post-Truth | WZB
There are many signs that we have entered a 'post-truth' era defined by the burial of 'objective facts' thanks to a public avalanche of 'appeals to emotion and personal belief', as the Oxford English Dictionary states. Critics of this 'post-truth' trend like to stress the political dangers of growing government secrecy, the lies of

POST-TRUTH AS POST-DEMOCRACY | Festival of Ideas
What is the point of free speech? Truth, said the philosopher J.S. Mill, and he was partly right. Free speech is not a fisticuff free-for-all. What matters is knowledge, especially the knowledge needed to govern ourselves in a democracy. 'Post-truth ' was recently the Oxford English Dictionary word of the year, made manifest in

Julio Teehankee argues that “presidential success depends largely on the president's ability to form a consensus around a narrative and generate public support for the storyline.” But with the advent of the internet, the rules of the game have changed. In fact, there is no need for a storyline. In our post-truth

The Post-Truth Era: Dishonesty and Deception in Contemporary Life
At one time we had truth and lies. Now we have truth, lies, and statements that may not be true but we consider too benign to call false. Euphemisms abound. We're “economical with the truth,” we “sweeten it,” or tell “the truth improved.” The term deceive gives way to spin. At worst we admit to “misspeaking,” or “exercising

The academic roots of post-truth society – Battle of Ideas 2018
It has almost become a cliché to note that we seem to be living in a new age ofpost-truth, or post-factual politics. Liberal critics and academics in particular blame right-wing politicians for disparaging the importance of evidence and expertise, and for stirring up emotions rather than appealing to rationality. Michael Gove's

This is the age of lies, as truth is trampled and falsity flourishes, its reach grotesquely amplified by social media and the internet. Or so believe many commentators dismayed by Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, climate change deniers, antivaccine campaigners, and the power of Hollywood stars whose
